Why does my mail program start to download messages then time out?

There may be a large message or possibly a corrupt message causing this. Try accessing your email using EBTech's WebMail feature. You can select and download (or delete) any of your messages from this screen. If you still have trouble downloading the email after removing the suspicous message through Webmail, don't hesitate to contact our Technical Services department for assistance.

What is Spam?

Spam is unsolicited e-mail on the Internet. From the sender's point-of-view, it's a form of bulk mail, often to a list culled from subscribers to a Usenet discussion group or obtained by companies that specialize in creating e-mail distribution lists. To the receiver, it usually seems like junk e-mail. In general, it's not considered good netiquette to send spam. It's generally equivalent to unsolicited phone marketing calls except that the user pays for part of the message since everyone shares the cost of maintaining the Internet.

Some apparently unsolicited e-mail is, in fact, e-mail people agreed to receive when they registered with a site and checked a box agreeing to receive postings about particular products or interests. This is known as both opt-in e-mail and permission-based e-mail.

What is a POP3 server?

The POP3 server is the incoming mail server and stands for "Post Office Protocol". When your mail program checks your mail it is the POP3 server that delivers it to you. EBTech's POP3 server is: mail.ebtech.net.

What is an SMTP Server?

SMTP is the outgoing mail server and stands for "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol". When you compose a message and send it, this server is responsible for getting your mail to the intended recipient. EBTech's SMTP server is: mail.ebtech.net.
