Adding Modem Init Strings

Several different factors play a role in the stability of your Dial-Up connection. If you sometimes receive the error message "The remote computer did not respond" when trying to connect to the internet, or find that you lose your connection periodically, follow the instructions below. The problem may be related to your modem being unable to communicate clearly with the server due to fluctuations in line quality, load on your computer, climate changes or other factors.

First try these common troubleshooting routines:

  • Be sure you are dialing to the correct Access Number: 519-332-1485
  • If you have a Call Waiting service, add *70 to the beginning of the access number to temporarily disable it while connected
  • Check the number of phones on the same line as the modem; try unplugging them
  • Close any unused applications on your computer to help free up resources

If you continue to have trouble, follow the instructions below:

Windows XP, 2000

  • Click 'Start'
  • Click 'Run'
  • Type "telephon.cpl" in the Open field. Click 'OK'.
  • Click the 'Modems' tab along the top.
  • Your modem will be selected. Take note of the name of your modem, it may be needed later.
  • Click 'Properties'.
  • The 'Maximum Speed' field should read 115200. If it does not, change it to 115200.
  • Click the 'Advanced' tab along the top.
  • In the 'Extra Initialization Commands' field enter in your Init String from the table below.
